Working in the labour room (LR) can be an enriching experience for a LR nurse. It’s incredible to see the birth of a new life and this can be one of the most rewarding experience of being a LR nurse. These nursing professionals play an important role in ensuring safe delivery for the mother and baby.

WHAT DOES A LABOR AND DELIVERY NURSE DO?

The roles and responsibilities of a labour room nurse are strikingly different from the roles and responsibilities of nurses working in other units. A LR nurse not just takes care of the mother in the labour room but also provides emotional support to the anxious partner and other family members.
Some of the responsibilities of a LR nurse includes

Educating the mother on what to expect through the delivery process

Monitoring fetal heart rate and contractions

Preparing the mother for delivery

Ensuring labor room is ready with all the needed sterile supplies and equipment

Initiating induction

Administering pain medication

Coaching the mother

Assisting with any complications that may arise

Prepare for cesarean (c-section) delivery, including emergency c-sections

Provide supportive care throughout the labor

In the labour room, nurse and patient ratios are typically 1:1 or 1:2 depending on the situation (that means a nurse only takes care for one or two patients at a time, as opposed to four or five), and a day in the life of a labour room nurse looks a lot different than any other part of the hospital.

Post Delivery Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a labor room nurse does not finish with the birth of the baby. She continues to monitor the mother and the baby till they are shifted back to their units. She will teach the first-time mother how to breast feed her baby and taking care of self and the little one. She will continue to monitor and manage for any complications that may occur post-delivery and seek the doctor’s assistance whenever required.

ON A DAY WITHOUT EMERGENCIES …

On a usual day where there is no emergency, the nurses on duty begin their day by taking the hand over from the previous shift nurse. The day nurses would decide among themselves how the patient load would be divided up. The patient load would depend on the acuity of the patient. For instance, if the patient was to have a vaginal delivery, the nurse might have 1-3 patients. If the patient were in active labor, the nurse might have 1-2 patients, depending on staffing. Once the patients are assigned, each nurse would visit her laboring patients and introduce herself. She would provide ice chips if needed. She would then assess the patient, including vital signs and fetal heart monitor strips. The nurse might also turn up induction to assist in the progression of labor if necessary.

EMERGENCIES

In a labour room very little planning can be done as just about everything is unpredictable. This is why that nurses are always on their toes in the labour room as they may never know what to really expect. The nurse is expected to be alert and observant at all the times during her shift especially when there are other variables complicating the pregnancy. For e.g., mothers with diabetes, hypertension, carrying multiples, pre-term labor etc.

Nurse making comfortable to Pregnant Patient

CHALLENGES A LABOUR ROOM NURSE FACES

No two mothers or the babies are the same. And so, the plan of care for each is different but very often one may face challenging situations that may throw all planning off the gear. Some of these are

1. Handling difficult babies: Looking at a newborn you are definitely going to fall in love with them. However, there may be times where you may have to deal with continuous crying, managing babies who are unable to latch and therefore unable to take in feeds. This may frustrate you at times as the long list of nursing tasks that you are supposed to complete may be delayed.

2. Handling complicated cases: You never know when things may turn around and a delivery that seemed smooth and easy turns out to be complicated one. This may keep you stressed till it’s over. At times, the obstetrician may have to take a quick call on shifting the mother to the OT for an emergency cesarean and you would be required to do all the needed prep.

3. Shortage of staff: Very often you will be faced with situations where a colleague would have called in sick or another would have taken an emergency leave or there would have been an increase in-flow of patients. While you struggle with difficult babies and complicated deliveries you would wish there were more staff to help you out. The high-stress nature of labor room nursing means that you always feel like you could use one or two extra pair of hands, regardless of how many nurses there are in the department.

4. Getting emotional: After spending hours with the mother supporting and encouraging her in the birthing process, you may get emotional when the mother finally delivers the baby. There may be other not so pleasant moments e.g delivery of a still birth where you may feel as to why the mother had to go through all this pain. In the labour room we tend to participate in the joyful as well as the sorrowful moments.

Nurse checking the Pregnant women.

WHO SHOULD OPT TO BE A LR NURSE?

To become a LR nurse you should have the ability to communicate well not just with your team, but with the parents to be, especially on what to expect during the birthing process. You also need to be a good observer and a quick thinker and should possess a wide variety of skills including expertise in intensive care, knowledge of maternal and child health especially caring for a new born baby. Above all you need to have immense patience in dealing with the mother’s mood swings, her loud screams and crying babies.

There is no shortcut to becoming an LR nurse, but with hard work, determination, and a strong education from a solid nursing program, you can achieve your goals of someday entering this field.

Rarely will the labour room see a dull day. Whether births are normal, short and sweet, complicated and dangerous, the staff will run the full range of emotions before a week is out. Expecting the unexpected is the one constant in a typical day for a labour nurse. The most rewarding part is having a beautiful healthy baby in the mother’s arms and seeing mother and father with their baby for the very first time.

As the healthcare industry continues to grow and evolve, Registered Nurses (RNs) no longer have to stick to just one path but have the option to change the direction of their career. In addition to being a noble and virtuous profession, nursing provides opportunities to offer your services in different work environments and in diverse roles. The career path acknowledges individual temperaments, personalities, and the preferred pace of the work environment.Apart from working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and clinics, RNs can also pursue opportunities in research labs, physician’s offices, NGOs providing healthcare services, corporates, insurance and law firms and in many other specialty roles. These options have multiplied with specialties and niches for nurses from all education levels. Apart from the bedside care, here is a list of diverse career options for a modern nurse and where they can pursue them:-

Physician Offices

Working as a primary care nurse in a physician’s office can be less stressful and exhausting as you will rarely have to deal with emergencies, and you will have a predictable schedule with fixed “office hours.” However, nurses working in a physician’s office need to be skilled in a variety of daily nursing procedures as they are often the first medical professionals that most patients come in contact with. Primary care nurses typically have to provide care for minor illnesses such as colds and allergic reactions however, they can choose to specialise in certain branches of medicine as the patients that you encounter might vary depending on your expertise. As primary care nurses encounter their patients on a daily basis, many form close personal relationships with them. Primary care nurses are most often employed in physician offices however, hospitals and other healthcare facilities also hire these nurses.

A degree in nursing opens up a plethora of fulfilling career options

Research Laboratories

If academics are your calling then you can opt for becoming a nurse researcher. A research nurse works hard to help create, evaluate, and perfect new and old medications and treatments for various medical problems. As a nurse researcher you are at the forefront of new medical discoveries, and help develop breakthrough cures and medical treatments. As this is a highly specific category of nursing, a specialised educational background is required to train you for the profession. Moreover, you must be able to effectively communicate with scientists, physicians, researchers, patients, and corporate executives as you will be working alongside them. Qualified research nurses have the option to work in a number of different settings including research organisations, universities, pharmaceutical companies, teaching hospitals, and government agencies.

Nursing Care Facilities

Transitioning from a bed-side role to a managerial position requires a combination of clinical expertise and leadership skills. The role is instrumental in creating a professional environment and fostering a culture that contributes to optimal patient care along with the opportunity to grow. Apart from supervising nursing staff in a hospital or clinical setting nurse managers oversee patient care, make management and budgetary decisions, set work schedules, coordinate meetings, and make decisions about personnel.

Nurse Ethicist

Ethics influence every facet of a nursing practice. However, despite being challenged with ethical problems on a daily basis, many student nurses never get the opportunity to explore and resolve its complexities. A nurse ethicist works in hospitals, clinics and research facilities to help the staff in combining science with principles and morality. Their duties are three-fold:-

Clinical ethics consultation, education, and management

Syllabus development and execution for medical student clerkships and residency programs and

Research and publication

Nursing Informatics

As effective communication is at the core of nursing, an informatics nurse boosts the management of information and communications in the profession. They take the clinical and the technical languages of the healthcare industry and make it user-friendly and patient-centric while driving improved outcomes for patients and enhanced clinical workflows for healthcare staff. Documentation is the major emphasis in the field of nursing informatics.

Private and Public Education Institutions

As demand for the nursing profession increases, so does the demand to train qualified nurses. Becoming a nurse educator allows nurses to get the combined satisfaction of providing learners with the technical skills, refined skills, as well as the depth of knowledge that are instrumental for improving the quality of patient care. In order to train future nurses of the world, nurse educators must possess excellent communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and have a solid clinical background along with comprehensive and substantive knowledge in their particular area of instruction. The work setting is diverse ranging from long-term care facilities and hospitals, to universities, community colleges, vocational schools, etc. In addition to working in educational institutions, many nurse educators also work in clinical settings.

A medical expert in a private or public educational institute is a rewarding career prospect for a nurse

NGOs

Although nursing implies care of the vulnerable, the role is often misunderstood and restricted to a traditional hospital setting. However, nurses can also assist by filling the gap in communities without the access to physicians by working in NGOs. While this might be a highly rewarding experience, RNs working in these settings need to acknowledge the lack of resources available for undertaking the care of patients and require strong critical thinking and stress management skills to best serve their patients. Nurses who are interested in pursuing this objective can also work for ‘Doctors Without Borders’ or for the UN in countries such as Africa, Asia or other Middle Eastern countries having refugee crises such as Iraq, Yemen and Syria. They can undertake leadership positions overlooking care of patients within the most critical zones. Expertise or experience in emergency, pediatrics, infectious diseases, tropical diseases, and/or public health is particularly applicable to the field. Organisations such as these also recruit nurse-midwives, nurse anesthetics, and neonatal nurses. Nurses expecting to work for Doctors Without Borders can expect participating in mass vaccination initiatives for measles or triaging an influx of displaced people fleeing conflict. Working in these challenging settings ensures that you are offering your services to those who are in desperate need of your care and attention thereby confirming a greater social impact.

Volunteering at NGOs and facilitating mass vaccinations is an in-demand opportunity for a nurse.

Insurance and Law Firms

A career as a legal nurse is in demand with so many lawyers handling medical cases requiring well trained and experienced people with medical knowledge. Legal nurse consultants assist attorneys in the litigation process, and alternatively can also assist in evaluating healthcare and medical insurance claims, conduct medical research, and use their knowledge of both the legal and nursing fields to make recommendations and select medical expert witnesses. To become a legal nurse apart from a degree in nursing and some on-ground experience in the profession, some legal education is also requested by employers.

Providing medical legal help is a well-paid career option for a nurse

Private Companies

Nurses can choose to offer their services for occupational roles in private companies. Nurses in private companies are expected to provide high-quality care to the employees of the organisation, however they can also choose to work in nursing homes, or provide care to patients in a hospital. Responsibilities include initial patient assessment, monitoring vital signs, and nurturing patients to recovery.

Conclusion

To conclude, with the constantly evolving medical practices, an education in nursing can open up a diverse range of career options. With rising demand for qualified and trained nurses, the profession offers many worthwhile opportunities that can be pursued suitable to your personality type, especially if you are a little open-minded. To identify the best option for yourself the only way is to be bold and explore them, be it in a hospital or non-hospital setting.

Every year, brand-new nurses enter medical circles across the world – donning scrubs, clipboards, nursing shoes that help them be on their feet longer, and a heart full of excited trepidation. For most nurses, their first year is the most exciting – and terrifying in their whole profession.

Gone are the days of simulation labs and clinicals; now real lives are in their hands. This often overwhelms and alarms newly registered nurses, many of whom may choose to abandon this line of work because of an inability to cope or balance real-world risks and pressures.

That’s why this article will detail the most prominent challenges that graduating nurses will encounter when they start their first job. Study these possibilities, so that you know what’s coming when stepping out of your classes and into your workplace.

1. Physical Strain

The nursing profession is hard on the human body. Once you start working as a nurse, your body will hurt after almost every shift. Expect to be on your feet for most of the day, not to mention rushing around the hospital, lifting patients and equipment.

Expect to experience serious physical discomfort, especially in the first year when your body is not used to it. To combat this, follow a self-care routine (diet, exercise, stretches) beforehand. Stretch regularly. Purchase and wear compression stockings. Invest in good-quality shoes made specifically for healthcare professionals.

As a practicing nurse, you may have to deal with biases from colleagues as well as patients. Remember to open up about them with someone you trust and discuss ways in which you can overcome them.

2. A High Learning Curve

Nursing school teaches you many valuable skills, but nothing can replicate the real world. What is learned in school is at most, basic when compared to the situations, an actual hospital will throw at you. Expect a high learning curve in all spheres of not just your specialty, but of your day-to-day life in your workplace.

Nurses have to deal with multiple emergency situations, which will be terrifying without experience. They will need additional in-service training in multiple competencies: basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS), using electronic clinical management system (CMS), entry of in-patient medication order (IPMOE), performing venipuncture and blood extraction and much more.

Be it studying and practicing technical skills, figuring out the nuance of team dynamics and communication between colleagues or the standards for presentability expected by your employer, you will have to expend yourself to absorb more knowledge and apply it practically.

Do prepare yourself with what real world nursing entails after you graduate with your nursing degree

3. Orientation on Protocol

Every hospital and medical facility has a distinct set of operational protocols. This doesn’t just apply to global, national and state-level medical regulations the particular establishment must follow. It also refers to both passive and active protocol systems put in place by individual healthcare institutions. All first-year registered nurses (RN) must attend detailed orientations on protocol, as well as extensive documentation they have to study and commit to memory. They will have to adhere to these protocols in all situations, especially emergencies. That means they have only about a couple of weeks to learn what guidelines and regulation their work will be subject to.

Wear your nursing badge of honour proudly, it’s been a tough road training to be a nurse, and you deserve that respect.

4. Workplace Bias

Expect to run into some measure of workplace bias. Work cultures vary between employers, but in a high-stress environment such as healthcare, hierarchy and bias can be more emphatic. In their first year, RNs might face alienation from some seniors. This can be difficult to work with because new nurses need all the guidance they can get. Since good relationships with colleagues enhance one’s sense of belonging and facilitate self-development, the lack of it can be disheartening and create additional pressures on the individual.

Nurses can also be affected by bias is also a factor in nurses’ daily interactions. Bias can occur on the basis of almost anything – religion, culture, ethnicity, gender, etc. As an example, have a look at this account by a male nurse who relates his experience with a young patient and their mother.

“As I introduced myself to the mother of my patient, a three-year-old boy, I noticed that she seemed hesitant…..As we talked about his favorite cartoons and after he seemed more comfortable and started engaging in play, he started to trust me and even tried to take his medications. When I returned to check on him later, his mother seemed less tense and opened up about several issues that she did not fully understand and were concerning her. Later, she told me she was initially concerned about how a male nurse would interact with her son because, in her culture, men were not associated with being compassionate or emotionally expressive.”

5. Team Dynamics

This paper on the challenges of fresh nursing graduates during their transition period reveals that new RNs were hesitant to ask their seniors for help about clearing up their uncertainties because they were anxious about being criticised for insufficient knowledge. Participants in the study reported being criticised after committing minor mistakes.

While you are expected to work independently, you are also going to work in collaboration with other RNs, supervisors and doctors. They come with their own experiences, preconceptions and expectations from new joinees. Some of them may not have the patience for gently guiding graduating nurses. There might be some friction, which new RNs will have to work through without aggravating everyone else. Since they are at the bottom of the workplace hierarchy, they might face their share of unpleasantness on the job.

6. Patients’ (and their Families’) Expectations

Patients and their families do not care (or know) that you are new on the job. They see a nurse wearing the uniform, they assume that he or she is a professional who can answer their questions and tend to their needs. Every RN, no matter how experienced they are will have to deal with patients, relatives and everyone else in the ward.

Patients are often stressed and panicked, as are their family members. They are mostly frantic about having their questions answered and trying to find assurances about the health of their loved ones. First year nurses will have to learn to comfort them, and sometimes, convey bad news. They will have to learn how to endure and defuse emotional outbursts with compassion – all while providing appropriate, timely care to those who are sick and scared.

7. A Massive Workload

Every graduating nurse will experience a heavy workload. The average ratio of nurse to patients is 1:12, whereas the highest ratio is 1:21. Their workload entails reams of never-ending paperwork as well as managing multiple activities at the same time. Some of these tasks would be providing doctor-prescribed treatment after every round, answering patients, monitoring medicine intake of patience, etc.

Remember your job as a nurse is one that the whole world is grateful to you for pursuing!

Most hospitals and medical institutions are understaffed. Working with insufficient manpower will increase workload, and consequently stress. This is particularly true of nurses in their first year. It is not uncommon for them to work overtime, pull all-nighters, miss meals and have to forego some sleep.

Undoubtedly, your life as a nurse will be exhausting and seem thankless once in a while. But, you will also be one of the most important people in the world, saving actual lives every single day. Obviously, walking this path won’t be easy. But with the right tools and training at hand. It will be the most worthwhile thing you’ll ever do.

In the field of nursing, simulation training is one of the most effective ways to increase efficiency and familiarize student nurses with daily and rarely occurring medical scenarios. Nurses engage in simulation training to get master chief procedures such as inserting a catheter or tube. They are expected to perform similarly delicate tasks with great competency in highly demanding environments. Simulation training can help prepare for such scenarios. As per Christine Park, M.D. the 2017 President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, simulation training has three core benefits that include, “competency in technical skills, integrating cognitive and psychosocial skills into patient care, and enhancing team communication skills in a clinical environment.”

Simulation using models, drawings and mannequins help students succeed in real-world medical settings

To understand better, simulation training is an educational approach wherein a real-life experience is replicated or amplified in a controlled environment. It makes for an interactive and immersive learning experience through practical application of learned theories. The first mannequin was built in 1911 to train nurses to perform physical tasks such as dressing, turning, and transferring patients. Over time we have progressed to computerized mannequins that can imitate the body’s physiology. Simulation training has also been integrated in numerous nursing programmes such as those for mental health specialization or end-of-life care, etc. Anatomical simulation is an area of virtual reality that allows students to visualize patient anatomy by ‘virtually dissecting’ them. Immersive virtual reality is currently represented by two major companies, Oculus, which makes the Oculus Rift, and HTC, which makes the Vive. Simulation training has also been integrated in numerous nursing programmes such as those for mental health specialization or end-of-life care, etc. Nursing institutes have started incorporating digital and game based simulation techniques such as Bodhi Health’s MEDGAMES and MEDLEARN virtual simulation platform for nursing students to practice procedure-based skills or conduct skill-based assessments.

Simulation based surgeries allow students to gain practical knowledge of their theoretical study

A well-constructed simulation training programme can help student nurses experience “what if” scenarios, attain a problem solving attitude, manage crisis better, and observe the effects of techniques employed – all without repercussions. For the aforementioned reasons and more, simulation training plays a central role in nursing education. To ease out the process, we have created a reference checklist before you initiate simulation training for student nurses:-

Ensure You Have Secured the Required Permissions

Simulation testing demands professional and ethical behaviour. Educators need to ensure that there is mutual respect, confidentiality, willingness to accept and share constructive feedback, and that the performance is consistent with the institution’s policies. Prepare a fiction contract that outlines the importance and mutual agreement of performing as if in a real clinical situation for the benefit of fostering an engaging learning experience. A talent release is a mandatory legal document you require to receive consent of photography and videography during the training.

Simulation increases a medical student’s adeptness at performing delicate and critical tasks

Define the Purpose of Your Simulation

Healthcare simulation scenarios are created to address specific learning needs. Before creating a simulation, it is important to decide what information is needed and which part of the operation should be replicated to meet the objective. As stated by the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) the first step in scenario development is the completion of a need’s assessment. INACSL’s simulation design standard provides a sequential checklist for scenario development which can be used by clinical facilities, medical schools, and in postgraduate medical education. Once the learning objectives are clarified, it becomes easier to attain them through simulation training. Make sure that the objectives identified are limited in number and are specific or they might frustrate the learner and make the assessment complicated.

Define the Metrics for Evaluation and Assessments

Simply creating a simulation lab space does not ensure that the best training practices are incorporated. While self-confidence can be argued as a measure of assessment, there are other methods to enhance effectiveness of the education strategies. Kirkpatrick model of training effectiveness is the most commonly used evaluation framework which includes four levels of assessments:

Reaction: The satisfaction derived from the training

Learning: The increase in the skills and knowledge of the student

Behaviour: The observed changes in the behaviour of the participants

Results: The outcome of the simulation

Applying the aforementioned framework can help an educator measure how well the simulation training worked and how much it improved the learner’s knowledge, skills, ability in a medical setting. Training facilities could also create a survey to measure the effectiveness of the simulation training.

Conduct Pre-briefing and Debriefing sessions

Efficient communication is the cornerstone of every learning experience. To enhance the effectiveness of the simulation-based training, conduct a pre-briefing session prior to the hands-on lesson through orientation tasks and learning engagement activities. This would enhance learner satisfaction, participation, and effectiveness of simulation practice.

Debriefing sessions are conducted after the simulation to underline the thought process which would help improve future performance. Incorporating this practice as a habit would help both learners as well as educators to re-examine the simulated case experience, share their mental model, and foster the reasoning behind their clinical judgment.

Prepare the Instructors and the Learners

To ensure a seamless learning experience, it is important to prepare the instructors before the simulation. Organize simulation review materials such as learning objectives, equipment setup, expected interventions, vocal scripts, debriefing points, etc.

Discuss the expectations from the simulation training scenario with the learners. This includes assigning roles and responsibilities such as the lead medic, PC operator, facilitator and the team members who would assist. Remind them to treat the simulator as they would a real patient – with respect and empathy. Explain to them that while the simulation would largely imitate a life-like scenario, some things may appear artificial, however, for the sake of learning, they are to be overlooked.

Consider the Disadvantages

Constructing a healthcare simulation from scratch is a daunting task that can get complicated with limited funding. Nursing state boards and other accrediting bodies expect simulation programmes to follow recognised national standards, which can be hard to get right in the first go. As discussed, it is also difficult to measure the results from simulation training to gauge whether it was successful or not.

However, despite these initial hiccups adopting simulation training far outweighs its drawbacks. The trial-and-error approach through simulation training followed by analysis of training sessions, identification of errors, and discussions of emotions and feelings that influenced the trainees can help enhance their learning experience exponentially.

As the pandemic shakes the world, the glaring shortage of nurses across the globe is highlighted. This has brought into the limelight the need to recruit and train additional healthcare professionals with the responsibilities and requirements that come with being a nurse. To more than just succeed in your daily duties as a nurse, and make a fulfilling career in the long run, we’ve put together a list of some of the habits that you can cultivate early on in your career:-

Engage in Critical Thinking

It is wrongly assumed that nurses only follow orders. Although strict adherence to instructions is a critical part of the job, nurses also need to thoroughly assess their patients and the situation and employ critical thinking to implement an effective plan of action. Nurses are expected to identify unusual medication combinations, adapt to changing team setups, and sometimes work with the limited resources available to them, which requires critical thinking and awareness.

Remember life does not have to be as serious as it may often seem. Have a laugh.

A good way to exercise problem solving and critical thinking is my reading books, and solving daily brain teasers, sudoku puzzles etc. Also consider not resorting to your calculator for math calculations – try to do them in your head, and only use the calculator to confirm your answer.

Practice Paying Attention to Detail

Nurses are under tremendous pressure and are constantly serving different patients throughout the day which could result in human error. However, with close attention to detail this can be prevented. Nurses have to ensure that the instructions are stringently followed and the patient records are accurately maintained at all times.

The requirement to be attentive to every small change of their patient’s medical condition and alerting the physicians and other members of the healthcare team, all emphasise the importance of being conscious of the details.

A good way to sharpen this skill is by meditating daily. It increases your ability to focus for long periods of time and allows you to block out distractions effortlessly.

Build Effective Communication Skills

As nurses are dealing with the health of their patients first hand, they must be proficient at advocating for the patients who may not have the strength to speak for themselves. Strong communication skills are indispensable when it comes to interfacing between all the members of the healthcare team. Apart from verbal communication, non-verbal communication cues such as smiling, maintaining eye contact, and being a better listener can offer a patient a sense of comfort knowing that their nurses care for them.

Communication skills get better by practice. Ensure you speak your mind, and don’t keep your feelings bottled up – not only will it take care of your mental health, but also teach you how to communicate those tough ideas, feelings and emotions effectively.

Show Your Willingness to Learn

With the changing medical landscape, technological improvements, and breakthrough studies in science, nurses need to constantly adapt and express a willingness to learn. A genuine curiosity must be complemented with asking questions if something is not clearly understood. There is no room for ambiguity considering the sensitive and delicate nature of the job.

Nursing requires a lifelong commitment to learning which could be as simple as inquiring after your patient’s health, building trust, or learning about the new equipment and diseases afflicting mankind. Discuss learning opportunities with the senior management so that you are always updated with the latest medical advancements.

Enrol yourself in online courses, and remind yourself that learning never stops – not when you graduate from university and not when you turn 50. Learning is a lifelong process.

Be Technologically Savvy

Technology has become an integral part of modern nursing. A technologically savvy nurse can have huge competitive advantage over his or her peers in being considered for promotion in the organisation. There are applications that allow nurses to determine medication dosages and websites that allow access to electronic health records. Being an advocate or champion of any software or technology that your organisation uses can be a good way to gain early advantage in your career.

Update your phone applications, invest in the latest technology, and open yourself to using automation products – to be at the top of the game at all times.

Be a Team Player

Working in a team is an inevitable part of being a nurse. On certain occasions, you may be expected to work with crew members and health care professionals that you find hard to agree with. Working with physicians who do not return the same respect as you expect is a reality.

However building your self-confidence by being on top of your skills can help you stand your ground and manage such situations. It is also important to treat every one of your colleagues with the same respect as you would like to receive and maintain a professional decorum in all stressful situations. Maintaining a healthy work relationship with your colleagues can help you sympathize with one another and receive the much-needed emotional support at your workplace.

Consider joining a team sport for after or before work hours. While playing a sport will help you remain fit, it will also teach you important lessons of sportsmanship and team spirit.

Find a Mentor

It is important to consider that veteran nurses have with them several years of experience and knowledge that cannot be easily replaced. Therefore, to receive proper guidance in your professional nursing journey, it is important to identify experienced nurses who can share their knowledge without the fear of judgment. In the long run, these mentors can also provide you recommendations for your work or refer you for right opportunities that they come across.

Network with and find mentors in your colleagues and seniors at work.

Don’t shy away from networking with those senior to you at your workplace. Reach out to them, request them to join you for lunch, connect with them on Linkedin, and aim at building a long-lasting and trustworthy relationship.

Be Ambitious

If you think you have entered the nursing profession merely for the paycheck, you might be in for a rude shock. While the pay can prove to be beneficial, there are several aspects to nursing that must be considered before entering into the profession. These include the expectation of long working hours, physical and emotional burnout, and witnessing a patient suffering-which can never be easy. However, the rewards are incomparable. Curing the health of a patient can be immensely fulfilling in itself and along the journey, some special ones will leave an impression on your heart.

For a successful nursing career, set S.M.A.R.T. goals. Those that are:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Realistic and

Timely

Step one of being successful is to be ambitious and dream of a long and fulfilling career.

Show Perseverance

Like most professions, nursing requires a long-term commitment to the job even when the situation gets trying. This does not mean that you suffer in silence and shoulder physical and emotional exhaustion. Foot problems and back injuries are common among nurses and so it is important to invest in good shoes and stretch and exercise to reduce back problems.
On the emotional front, every nurse should consider counselling and support to prevent an emotional burnout. These self-investments along with the acknowledgement that there is no short cut to success – can help you stick with the job when things get difficult.

Be a Thought Leader

The currency of the 21st century is a strong digital presence. Engaging with your online community through images and blog posts on your learnings and experiences not only helps you emerge as a thought leader, but also helps so many aspiring nurses learn from your knowledge and share the same with others.

To start with, consider writing blog posts on Medium, sharing photographs on Instagram, and building a networking profile on Linkedin. To know more about how you can leverage social media to win in your career, read our blog post on How to Use Social Media Professionally to Make Yourself Discoverable.

Remember, knowledge when shared only doubles – and today, like never before, it is extremely easy to have a voice and reach out to thousands of interested individuals with your message.

Enjoy Good Humour

Despite the challenges of the profession, nurses who can find time for a laugh are comparatively more successful than those who are always sulking. Incorporating a light-hearted attitude can not only relieve your own stress, but also help spread positivity to other nurses, patients, and their families. In distressing times patients and their family members can be appreciative of a little bit of happiness.

Celebrate your small victories and enjoy a good laugh from time to time.

Watch movies, read books that make you happy and meet people who make you laugh. Listen to music, podcasts and audiobooks, watch shows and remind yourself to not take life too seriously.

Work-life balance? As a nurse?

What exactly is that supposed to be?

Sadly, that’s the reaction most nurses have when you ask them about maintaining work-life balance. As practitioners of a profession where you are literally meant to take care of people and bring them back to health, nurses are almost always naturally self-sacrificing individuals. Add that to the demands of the job itself, and consequently maintaining work-life balance drops low on the list of priorities for most nurses.

Unfortunately, this usually spells disasters. Though we often tend to forget this, nurses are indeed human. They might pull off Herculean tasks all day, but without taking time for themselves, they can burn out quickly and catastrophically.

Most nurses aren’t just handling anxious patients and worried patient families. They also have to deal with their own families, household chores, kids and, in the current global predicament, financial pressures resulting from the loss of their spouse or other family members’ jobs.

Since, nurses are socialised into a caretaker role, they instinctively put others’ needs before their own. It is quite common to see nurses neglect themselves and ignore the negative consequences of the stress, fatigue and isolation of their jobs. This takes a serious toll on their health and eventually their ability to do their job.

This article will run through a few steps nurses can take to ensure their physical and mental well-being even when working at their demanding and draining jobs.

Create a Realistic Routine

With a job as demanding as nursing, self-care is not a natural part of day to day life. It is important to set aside a couple of hours each day to tend to oneself. This could include anything from cardio and protein shakes, tea and a good book to catching up with family or friends. Whatever the activity, it should help you recharge your mind and body. Consider practicing mindfulness for a psychological detox, and pair it with a few stretches to relax those cramped muscles.

Most importantly, leave work at work. Once you have created a routine dedicated to achieving work-life balance, STICK TO IT.

“Nurse is relaxing at work.”

Make Health a Major Priority

Your patients need you in peak condition, as do your family and loved ones. But most importantly, you need yourself to be in peak condition. Remember, you cannot pour out from a cup that is empty. To take care of others, you must be taken care of as well.

Do not let your diet and exercise regimes suffer because of work hours. Obviously, we understand that making garden fresh salads for every meal is not possible, and neither is getting in an hour of cardio.

Take weekends to work on meal preps, take a homemade lunch (and if possible, evening snacks) to work and try to stay away from processed junk, especially soda. Since the job demands that you stay on your feet, try to get in 10000 steps a day (or close.) Try to drink sufficient water. Consult a doctor (you should know plenty of them) and see if you can start taking supplements to make up for any nutritional deficiencies that may occur from irregular meals, mealtimes or other job-related pressures.

“Nurse is praying at work”

Delegate and Start Saying NO

You cannot do everything yourself, and despite what your job training tells you, you are not supposed to. Start delegating your duties. Ask your spouse or sibling or even an adult child to help with grocery shopping or laundry or household chores. Get things delivered once a week so that no one has to trudge to stores multiple times. You don’t have to cook everyday; either prep meals in the weekend or take turns cooking with other members of your family.

At work or at home, learn to say no within reason. Don’t feel guilty for turning down extra shifts or projects because you need the rest. Openly communicate with your family about your need for time with them, as well as time by yourself. To rejuvenate yourself, be honest with yourself about what you really need and consciously make attempts to include that into your life.

Develop a Workplace Support System

Establish supportive relationships with your coworkers so that will cover for you, if needed. For example, once in a while you may need someone to cover your shifts so that you can take time off or attend to an emergency. Sustaining pleasant, professional relationships at work also help to maintain a peaceful and cooperative work environment, which in turn contributes to lower levels of stress and conflict.

“Nurse is supporting coworker.”

Take Moments of Rest at Work

When you’re a nurse, every day is a busy day. Despite that, remember that your physical and mental health won’t hold up too long if you do not take time to breathe, even if for a few minutes. Try to grab a coffee with a co-worker or maybe listen to a quick BTS song (if you’re a fan) when you’re done with some of your tasks. Essentially, give your mind the chance to unwind not just after, but during the workday. Work in these little breaks so that you do not crash and burn the minute you sign out of work.

“Nurses taking moment of rest at work.”

Deal with Conflict Immediately

Whether personal or professional, do not let conflicts magnify into creating long-lasting consequences. Engaging in the necessary conversation may seem awkward or difficult, but it will serve you in the future by resolving the conflict before it can breed resentment and ill-will. Be honest and forthcoming about your concerns. If you are indeed in the wrong, apologise. Try not to take conflicts home with you, if that is possible. Remember that a harmonious workplace is essential to maintaining work-life balance.

Since Registered Nurses (RNs) are educated to be self-sufficient professionals, they often assume they can handle everything on their own. But it is impossible for one person to be everything to everyone all of the time; nurses can and should turn to family, friends and colleagues for support. No matter how pressured you feel to handle everything yourself, do not lose sight of the fact that you are more than your job.

—

As a nurse, you are one of the most important contributors to a stable and healthy society. This grave responsibility has a way of overwhelming any individual concerns, but such an occurrence must be resisted. Without work-life balance, nurses cannot survive in a constantly demanding and draining profession. Invest in your health and sanity because your patients need you not just now, but for the long-term.

In the last blog we covered how your online social media presence has become indispensable for your professional development. In this one, we will discuss how you can prepare for your dream job and leave a lasting impression on your interviewer with your resume and presentation skills.

Your interviewer has piles of resumes to scan through and cannot devote more than two minutes per resume – so it is important that your application stands out and makes a good first impression.

Although there is no such thing as a perfect resume, the good news is that it is not very difficult to write a near-perfect resume if we follow some basic rules of maintaining clarity, brevity and formatting.

This brings us to the things we should consider while preparing our CV.

The basics of writing a CV

Contact Information: Ensure that the contact info you provide is up to date and completely accurate.‍

Format: Keep headlines large enough to draw attention, but not so large that it looks comical. Use a professional looking font, not anything cursive or containing a flourish. Be mindful of the space between words and sentences so that employers do not have to struggle with reading.

Education and Work History: Follow chronological order, and keep the details of your current or most recent employment at the top. Ensure that dates of employment and departure from jobs are accurate. Separate school and work experience for greater clarity. Start with education, and then move on to work timelines.

How to make your CV stand out

“Make sure your resume stands out, is visually appealing and concise.”

Start with an objective statement

Since a resume is meant to obtain an interview for the applicant, it must be able to offer a clear image of what the candidate has to offer and intends to accomplish. Communicate this with an object statement that highlights your goals and your skills.

Keep the statement concise, clear, use action words and quantifiable details. For example,

“Detail-oriented, highly-motivated nursing professional with 10+ years of experience treating critical care patients, leading staff training and counseling patients and their families seeks position with [insert organization] as a registered nurse manager.”

Remember to write a statement that you can strongly support with your educational qualifications and work history.

Highlight experience and areas of expertise

Don’t just say that you have experience as a nurse. That is far too vague, and all your competitors have the exact same thing on their resumes. Instead, focus on providing specifics about the skills that you bring to the table. Don’t wait until the interview to talk about them. If necessary, create a separate document and list your abilities, which can range from blood draws, taking vitals, urgent care experience and more.

“Be confident of your resume, and know what you’ve written in it at the back of your hand.”

Use keywords

Employers sometimes tend to scan resumes to look for certain terms. You might not know the exact terms they are looking for, but use the job description as a guide to gain an edge here.

For example, if the job description includes specific requirements, let’s say, venipuncture, ACLS, chemotherapy, then include those keywords in your resume.

Additionally, scour the employer’s website to understand their mission, vision, values and priorities. Try to use similar language in your resume and cover letter so that the employer can see that you are a great fit for both the position and the organization.

Be brief

Think of your resume as an advertisement rather than a biography. In a world of increasingly lower attention spans, do not expect potential employers to scout through pages of extensive detail. Assume that employers have stacks of resumes to go through, and thus do not have the time to spare on any novel you might write in place of a CV. Create the resume with an elevator pitch mindset in place.

“In addition to a neat resume, you must present yourself professionally.”

Now that we know what a good CV entails, let’s look at what not to include in your resume:-

Ideally, the resume should not exceed two pages at most. If possible, confine it to a single page.

You should not repeat your activities, experiences, qualifications on your resume.

Don’t write your resume in paragraph formats, instead stick to bullet points.

Avoid using multiple fonts or font colors

Do not write the date of the day you wrote the resume on.

Do not share any personal sensitive information other than your contact details.

Do not include your low grades, low GPAs, failures. Your resume is your place to shine!

Do not list physical characteristics (such as -height, weight, etc.)

Remember, a resume is only the first step to inching closer to your dream job. Let’s assume that the near-perfect resume you created has secured you an interview date with your employer. Now you must concentrate on meeting the expectations your interviewer has of you through your resume – and a good way to do that is by presenting yourself professionally. Dress well in an ironed formal attire, arrive on time, practice a firm handshake, and most importantly don’t forget to wear your smile.

Preparing for nursing interviews

Shape your story: No matter the interview, its purpose is to understand your story. Employers try to get a sense of who you are, both as a prospective employee and a human being. Take the time to shape the image of yourself that you want to convey. This does not mean that you should make up stories about yourself. It means that you should have your thoughts in order so that you don’t stumble when answering basic questions like “What do you bring to the table in this organization?”

Do the research: Take the time to learn about the who, what and where of the organization you are applying to. If possible, reach out to people who work there or have worked there in the past. Ask them about their experiences, and get to know what your future employer wants in their employees.

Practice: Practice mock interviews with friends, family, peers. Use this list of interview questions nursing applicants are likely to be asked.

Prepare questions for your interviewer: Your interviewer wants someone with an inquisitive mind. The best way to depict this quality is to ask smart, relevant questions. Have these questions listed beforehand.

What questions can you ask your interviewer?

Let’s break this up into categories.

Company Culture

Can you define the work culture here?

What is the management style?

How do you like working here?

How do you provide feedback to your staff when they make a mistake or have an opportunity to improve?

Work-related tasks

What qualities are you looking for in the nurses here?

What medical record systems and equipment will I be using?

What kind of orientation or training is provided?

Who will be my reporting manager?

Is there a mentorship program offered to nurses? Are there provisions for continued support?

What major challenges can I expect to face?

How are performance reviews structured here?

What are the shifts offered to nurses?

What is your overtime policy?

Do you have on-call requirements?

Do you have weekend rotation requirements?

Realistically, what are the hours I will be expected to work?

Professional Development:

Are there any opportunities for further education and learning?

Would I be supported in obtaining relevant certifications?

Are there benefits available for professional certifications, tuition reimbursements, conference attendance, etc.?

The key to both a great resume and a captivating interview lies in forethought, preparation and clarity. Invest time and effort into research so that you can answer and ask questions with ease. Since it is important for a nurse to possess a sharp mind, an instinct towards taking quick action and the ability to take fast decisions, these qualities will have to be displayed in both the CV and the interview. Use the guidelines in this article to put your best professional food forward, and show employers the value you bring to the proverbial table.

Establishing yourself as a thought leader in medical communities as well as larger social circles by communicating on channels like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter can increase your connections exponentially, and can place you on the center stage amidst a global audience. To help you jumpstart your digital journey, we have put together some quick tips and ways in which you can build a constructive social media presence:-

Express Your Uniqueness

Today, most professionals have a personal brand or an expression of themselves that represents them on an individual level, just like a corporate brand represents a business entity. This requires some investment of time, effort, and brainstorming but if done consistently can pay off in the long run in the achievement of professional goals.

The following are some questions that can help you think about yourself as a brand:-

What is your sole purpose for creating this digital store-front?

Where do you hope it will take you?

What are your objectives?

What are your beliefs?

A digital channel without a persona is meaningless. In addition to referring to this extensive guide on the use of social media do glance through some of the key ways in which you can build an impactful brand:-

Think of what you would like to highlight in your personality or professional achievement that is unique

Put together a set of visuals (photographs/ illustrations) that depict your persona

Add personality to your profession for instance – What social causes are you most concerned about? What are your hobbies outside of work?

Bring together your network in one platform

Share your insights on your channels regularly and communicate effectively

Make it Personal

Nursing is still a very underrepresented profession on social media. Considering the current circumstances where nurses are saving the day by saving the lives of Covid-19 patients, the larger public wants to know the story behind a nurse’s life. However, since nursing requires us to be physically involved and mindfully present at all times, it is hard to maintain a social media presence.
Knowing so, we recommend investing that extra bit of time and energy into building a digital profile, because not only will it boost professional growth, but will also inspire others to walk in your footsteps. The world needs an honest picture of what nursing is all about, and there aren’t enough voices doing that. Be raw, be real, and tell your story of the excellent, the good, the bad and the ugly that comes with nursing.

This curated list of nurses who are active on social media features some well-known influencers like – Dr. Charnelle Lewis, Brittney Wilson, The Gypsy Nurse. Follow them for inspiration and support them by building a larger digital community of nurses.

Let’s look at Brittney Wilson’s profile to gain some inspiration by studying what she’s done right. To start with, her username – “thenerdynurse” – speaks volumes about her character – as one who is probably very studious and enjoys learning the technical details that comes within the field of nursing. Second of all, her bio starts with the simple sentence – “I help nurses feel more confident.” It explains the objective behind her Twitter page. Moreover, she has a link to a personalized website, and she posts multiple times a week to keep her user base of 35.7k followers engaged. Do also notice how her posts have a little knowledgeable take away or a relatable element in them, so that every reader leaves her page satisfied and excited for more.

Last but not the least, some of these stories showcase how nurses have saved the lives of people in the past, imagine how inspiring they would be if they were shared more openly on social media. From preventing someone from committing suicide to saving a seventh-grader from a stroke, nurses are real-word superheroes – and their stories deserve to get featured on every platform.

Embedded Tweet parameter reference | Docs | Twitter …

Know your Niche, and Project It

Unlike most other professions, the skills required for nursing include a unique mix of soft and hard skills. The education and training to be a nurse are intensive, and the work experience matters. This diverse nature of nursing provides an opportunity for nurses to build a unique brand. Though it’s quite different from regular full-time jobs, nurses require experience promotions and increased compensation as their career grows and also their brand. The key to growing the personal brand is to follow a systematic process of internal reflection, strategic development, and organic creation.

Moreover, since the industry is governed by personal experiences, accreditations, advanced degrees, specialties, and various care environments, the audience is intrigued to know more about each of the avenues, and it is up to you to pick a niche, and create a window for them to peek through and gain an insight into what your world looks like.

You need not be an expert to build your online presence, especially when you are just starting out. You can simply talk about your daily work or include the following factors:-
– your good or not-so-good-experiences

– your professional certificates, online course credentials or credit hours completed

– what you learn from your interactions with patients or their family members

– any life-saving cases that you come across and the way you manage them

– talk about your area of specialisation

– your interaction with students and what you learn from them if you are an academician

– any new technology that you come across in your practice or education

– the research paper or the data collection methodology you are working on and why it was important for you

– the highlight of your daily routine

– the colleagues or supervisors who help you out at your job

– the things that you are grateful for

– the areas you’d like to improve on or learn better

By asking questions, sharing experiences in the relevant communities, you can be assured of receiving relevant answers while also making great friends.

Share the Challenges of the Industry

Life as a nursing student isn’t easy. Some of the more well-known issues include but are not limited to the following:-

The quality of nursing education is dwindling even in premier institutes, and practical exposure for undergraduate students barely cuts corners. This leads to disappointment for both employers and new nurses on entering the workforce as the expectations and outcomes differ.

The work hours are demanding, and work situations are challenging.

It is not easy to maintain a work-life balance, and thus freshers experience burnouts.

The more knowledge we spread and the more awareness we create in regards to the tribulations faced by nurses, the more likely it is for people to find solutions within the industry. Instead of keeping quiet about challenges, we must tweet about it, write blog posts on it, upload a simple video explaining ourselves, share photographs that prove the existence of challenges, and use the power of social media to eradicate all evils that lurk around the nursing industry.

Build a Community

Everybody’s nursing journey is very unique, and nothing is more rewarding than sharing your story with someone who has been there and done that, and understands what you might be going through. It is also beneficial to know others’ missions and values in the field and connect with those forging a path similar to yours.

Travel opportunities and social media have made it easier than ever to build professional relationships and maintain connections all over the globe. It is crucial to look for mentors and seek support and advice throughout your career life. Remember, there is strength in unity, and social media is a golden opportunity to build this unity.

Grow your professional base, open yourself to a broader audience, expand your thesis and papers’ reach, and add immense value to your certifications – all by documenting your nursing narrative online!

Know Your Platforms

While platforms like Facebook and Instagram encourage the telling of personal experiences, those like LinkedIn and Twitter encourage you to contribute to the digital persona of your industry in the professional realm.

The ultimate networking tool available to professionals, including nurses, is LinkedIn. However, many of us in the medical field disregard it as a channel for entrepreneurs and job-seekers only. That is not the case. LinkedIn focuses on connecting colleagues and peers within each industry. Creating a LinkedIn profile as a nurse involves basic steps listed in this article. In the beginning, it may appear foreign, but overall it is a user-friendly platform and an seamless way to learn about the developments in the field, find new job opportunities and connect with like-minded people. For e.g. commenting on any discussion post shared by an individual or a thought-leader you follow, can bring you in the limelight. Consistently in this regard will help your stories reach the right ears of recruiters on Linkedin and will open you up to newer career opportunities.

Similarly, Twitter is a great way to put your point forward, discuss, and deliberate effectively. For example, as a nurse, you can use your media handles to reach out to higher authorities and present the difficulties you face because of a lack of flexibility and demanding work in the present healthcare situation. Your network can help you promote your concerns and get the required help. Here’s a list of hashtags you can follow on Twitter to place yourself amidst a global nursing community.

The most promising social media platform is currently Instagram, with over 1 billions users on it every month. Think of Instagram as your public photo album. Document your journey with visuals in the form of photographs, quotes, videos, reposted content and gifs to share with your audience your unique story. It is no secret that the human learns best through visuals – and this is where Instagram becomes a golden opportunity for you to teach your audience the secrets of a nurse’s life. Additionally one can make the most of the platform by using all its features: IGTV, Reels, stories, highlights, live streams etc., as elaborated here.

—

More than anything else, as medical professionals we have a duty towards the larger world to share our story and make nursing more transparent than it is. As Mike Sevilla, MD, a Family Physician at the Family Practice Center of Salem, says, “When I talk to doctors, one of the things that I like to bring out is things that are wrong on the Internet, or myths that are out there. Probably about 10 years ago, there was a research study that was out that said that vaccines cause autism, which is incorrect. There is still a lot of information out there on the Internet about that, and patients bring that to me all the time.”

Last but not the least, as you get accustomed to social media, you will quickly find how enjoyable it can be (no wonder we have over 2.5 billion active users on social media today – and the numbers are only predicted to rise.) So snap, click, tweet, write, post, follow and enjoy an alternate universe always at an arm’s length on your screen.

With the recent change in the role that I have experienced I felt that there was a need to write this blog post regarding the issues encountered by the nurses and other support staff while using informatics solutions to facilitate patient care.
The problem has been understood and highlighted by the health professionals perennially that ‘they’, who are using the electronic solutions must be involved in its development and be part of other important stages of implementation. I ponder that when these solutions are developed, tested or implemented how many health professionals are involved.

For example while entering some important patient parameters in the electronic system one might wonder about some very basic things that could have been done better. These little things can only go right when we involve the end user periodically, seek their feedback actively about what makes their life easier and what deters them from entering important information in the system. Let’s face it, if the end user is not comfortable there is a possibility he/she might not want to take all the effort and try to fit ‘in the system’.

So how do we rectify/ improve?

Keep up your training game

As a clinical practitioner I would be happy if I was explained every now and then what is new in the system and how I can use it to my advantage. It is often challenging to have one on one training but periodic updates will make clinical staff to be more oriented and help them to be more confident about the EHR/EMR use.

Direction for Clinical Documentation

It can be often confusing what electronic documentation needs to be done by whom and under what circumstances. It would be good if informaticists could get under the skin of clinical staff and understand what they think. Best possible solution for this could be more involvement of clinical staff. For example in an emergency department a new nurse might get confused about what all documentation she needs to do when she is triaging a patient. There can be MAR charts that she needs to fill, a triage form and then moving on to vitals sign chart or may be a care plan. What happens if she forget any one of them?

While designing a system you have done a good job, you have created the forms which are easy to fill but did you give a thought what could happen if someone ‘new’ forgets to fill information as they were to stressed as they were trying to learn everything. So a clear direction or listing would help. This step remains the same when you expect clinical staff to fill printed
copies. Or maybe take advantage of electronic system and have a step wise process created that automates the electronic documentation one needs to do and save both time and effort. For example emergency nurse begins the documentation by triaging and she is prompted to click on the next set of documentation she needs to be complete with some flexibility as she might have to come back later as she looks after the patient.

Interact with Front Line

It is best to seek support from the clinical nurses and other staff who are using the solution. Learning from the horse’s mouth would give you adequate feedback where you went wrong. In fact, it would serve as a two way process to learn things and clarify things in terms of system usability and utility.

Easy Feedback policy

It would be wonderful idea to be able to express the concerns in the system by the end users without identifying the person as such. It might add to the load of the informaticist but some genuine feedback might come your way to make your life easy as well for the users.

Flexibility

System designers/ Informaticist can try to provide flexibility in data entry for the health professionals to explain things that might go wrong during electronic health/medical system use for example if care was not provided to the patient what is the possible explanation to it or if an intervention was missed what went wrong. As informaticist, there is a responsibility that remains with you that you provide continuous support, understand the needs of end users by visiting the site where the solution will be used and explain the need to change your course of action whenever it happens. A simple example is, if you decide to revoke a system feature without
explaining there is chance of misinterpretation by the clinical staff who might be using it and were quite happy about it.

To Conclude

With this short blog the only thing that I want to emphasize is that firstly you cannot replace a healthcare informaticist/nurse informaticist by a non- clinical informaticist. And finally, if you claim to be a good informaticist professional, you are someone who is in constant touch with your target audience. So, chin up, healthcare informaticist are here to stay to ensure
the life is easier for the fellow health professionals.
